Shalom Community Christian Church, Greensboro, North Carolina began November 14, 1999. The ministry was birthed from a vision that God gave Pastor Eric Cole to have an interracial, intercultural, and intergenerational ministry.

Throughout his life, Pastor Cole has seen the division between races and cultures that are exacerbated on Sunday mornings when people tend to worship with others just like themselves. Growing up, he attended an all black church in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee. While attending Duke Divinity School, he worked as a student intern for an all white church in Raleigh, NC. This internship experience transformed his view about race, culture, and ethnicity. Pastor Cole wanted to leave that church because he was uncomfortable there for various reasons. The Pastor encouraged him to stay and he credits that experience with being the best preparation that he received for the global ministry to which God has called him. During his last month at the church in Raleigh, the Pastor asked him what his vision was for ministry after working in an all white setting for 3 years as a student intern. Pastor Cole responded that he wanted to serve the most integrated, interracial, intercultural church in their denomination throughout the country. Hence, Shalom began with a handful of members who shared the vision of being a source of peace (Shalom) within the local and larger communities.
